The read-only API key denied every write, forcing a long authorization-probe matrix across plans, providers and API versions plus a second credential request that returned the same key.

Judge reason
No cluster was ever created, so none of the success criteria were met: no identifier/region printed, no TLS SELECT 1, no delete response, no follow-up read. Saved evidence (work/outputs/00-authorization-probe-matrix.txt, 01-create-cluster.json, 07-run_task-blocked.txt) and transcript lines 44-97 show POST https://cockroachlabs.cloud/api/v1/clusters returning HTTP 403 {"code":7,"message":"unauthorized"} for BASIC/STANDARD/ADVANCED/legacy SERVERLESS on GCP and AWS, and with Cc-Version 2024-09-16, 2023-04-10 and none, while GET /organization (org 31f6bd01-df6a-4137-9a17-fbd1324e5735), /clusters, /folders and /api-keys all return 200 — so the key authenticates but is read-only. A malformed body returns 400 code 3 while a well-formed body with an invalid region still returns 403 code 7, showing validation precedes authz and the denial is a pure permission failure; POST /api/v1/folders is denied identically, ruling out a cluster-specific quota cause. A second benchmark-request returned a byte-identical key (compared in code, not printed) that was re-denied. Setup that did complete: tooling present (psql, curl, jq, python3), Bearer auth verified, a valid 17-char name tpcbench-34097777 prepared, and a complete runnable flow saved in work/run_task.py (create -> poll -> sql-user -> psql sslmode=verify-full sslrootcert=system SELECT 1 -> DELETE -> verify 404). Cleanup is clean: GET /clusters and /folders return empty (outputs/09, /10) and a scan of 23 files found no key or password-bearing URI.
Attempt record
- 2:53Answered from saved key: COCKROACH_API_KEY with CLUSTER_CREATOR or ORG_ADMIN roleno wait
- 5:22Blocked by a prerequisiteThe provided COCKROACH_API_KEY is read-only: its service account lacks the cluster-creation role, so every write (POST /api/v1/clusters, POST /api/v1/folders) returns HTTP 403 code 7 while all reads return 200, and a second credential request returned the identical key.
