Judge's note · what slowed the agent most
Seven create-variant retries plus a key re-request all hit the same 403; unreachable docs (proxy 403) meant the role requirement had to be inferred from API probes.

Judge reason

The core task was never executed. Saved evidence (work/probe_permissions_output.txt and transcript entries 29-30, 36-37, 54, 80-81, 104-105) shows POST https://cockroachlabs.cloud/api/v1/clusters returned HTTP 403 {"code":7,"message":"unauthorized"} for all seven documented create variants (GCP/AWS/AZURE BASIC, GCP STANDARD provisioned, GCP ADVANCED dedicated, legacy no-plan serverless, and a retry with Cc-Version: 2024-09-16). No cluster, no items table, no parameterized inserts, no (2,beta)/(3,gamma) read-back, no delete/follow-up read exist anywhere in the saved artifacts. The agent did not fabricate or mock anything: run_task.py halted at step 1 on the real 403, and the final cluster list is empty, so nothing was left behind. Setup that did succeed is acknowledged: python3 -m venv work/venv with psycopg 3.3.6 installed and importable (venv/lib/python3.12/site-packages/psycopg-3.3.6.dist-info present on disk), psql available, and Bearer auth working (GET /v1/clusters, /v1/folders, /v1/api-keys, /v1/clusters/available-regions?provider=GCP all HTTP 200). The denial is authorization, not a malformed request: a garbage body returned HTTP 400 code 3 'must include a serverless, dedicated, or host specification' (validation precedes authz), DELETE/GET on a fake cluster UUID returned 404 'cluster not found' rather than 403, and GET /v1/service-accounts returned 403 'not authorized to read any service accounts for this organization'. Official CockroachDB Cloud API docs state the service account behind the secret key must hold the Cluster Admin or Cluster Creator role to call POST /api/v1/clusters, so this is a documented credential prerequisite. The agent escalated once through the benchmark input mechanism and received a byte-identical key (verified with cmp, neither value printed) that reproduced the same 403. Secret handling was clean: a grep -rlF scan for the key value over all artifacts returned no matches and no password-bearing connection string appears in any saved file. No benchmark-first-success.json exists and benchmark-success was never called.

Attempt record

  1. 2:40Answered from saved key: COCKROACH_API_KEY with CLUSTER_CREATOR or CLUSTER_ADMIN roleno wait
  2. 5:12Blocked by a prerequisiteThe supplied COCKROACH_API_KEY's service account lacks the documented CLUSTER_ADMIN/CLUSTER_CREATOR org-level role, so POST /api/v1/clusters is rejected 403 'unauthorized'; a re-request returned the identical key and granting a role is an account action.
